MOTS-c is a synthetic linear peptide of sixteen amino acid residues, H-Met-Arg-Trp-Gln-Glu-Met-Gly-Tyr-Ile-Phe-Tyr-Pro-Arg-Lys-Leu-Arg-OH, and a mitochondria-derived peptide. It is built only from standard amino acids, with a free amine at the N-terminus, a free carboxylic acid at the C-terminus and no side-chain modification. Four residues are basic (three arginines and a lysine) and four aromatic (a tryptophan, two tyrosines and a phenylalanine).
The catalogue lists CAS number 1627580-64-6, the molecular formula C101H152N28O22S2 and a molecular weight of 2174.6 g/mol; the two sulfur atoms come from its two methionines. Those methionines are the likeliest sites of oxidation, each adding 16 Da, so mass spectrometry looks for them alongside the expected mass, while the tryptophan and tyrosines give good ultraviolet absorbance at 280 nm for HPLC. Each presentation is supplied as a lyophilised powder in a sealed vial.
