IGF-1 LR3 is a recombinant analogue of IGF-1: a single-chain polypeptide of eighty-three amino acid residues. Recombinant means the chain is produced by expression in a host organism and then purified, rather than assembled residue by residue through solid-phase synthesis like most compounds in this catalogue. Its name refers to an arginine at position 3 and a lengthened N-terminus, and at eighty-three residues it sits at the boundary between peptides and small proteins.

Polypeptides of this length are characterised by reversed-phase HPLC and by electrospray mass spectrometry, in which the molecule appears as a series of multiply charged ions deconvoluted to a single neutral mass; SDS-PAGE is often used alongside to show apparent molecular mass.
